Max Mikkilä is a Finnish-born cinematographer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Rooted in Nordic stillness and shaped by studies in Estonia, UK and Portugal his style balances quiet observation with a bold presence of the lens. His cultural background may favour detachment, yet his cinematography won't. He prefers to give the image weight and a presence.
Many of Max’s visual preferences are drawn from a love to sci-fi and fantasy. These genres feature grittiness, texture and tangible worlds we can almost smell. He lights and frames with emotional clarity in mind, aiming for pictures that carry both atmosphere and intention.
Max’s first shoots featured skateboarding, a skill soon overtaken by filming that same sport. Since then, he’s worked through lighting and camera departments and built the foundation beneath his own visual voice. On set, he’s known for a quiet professionalism, focus and calm and leadership.
Now based in Edinburgh, Max is focuses on narrative fiction and commercial work in the UK and beyond.
